Project Spotlight – October 2022

Modern Holland Stone Driveway Addition

This past week we just finished up a ~1400 square foot driveway utilizing 100% slate 4×8 holland stone. A few months ago, the homeowner was so happy with some turf work we did in the backyard and finding out that we do pavers too, that he got on our schedule for his the driveway addition he’d been looking to get done. The homeowner and designer wanted to go with what I would describe as a mid-century-modern / zen feel to match with the rest of the home which is why we employed the unusual grid pattern for this project.

Our first paver-only project!

Interestingly, it was our first time doing a project that was solely pavers; no turf, no landscaping, just pavers! It came out fantastic and we are already back on the homeowner’s calendar for more work.

Being our first large paver driveway, it was a fun week! We have a lot of experience with patios and their relationship to our turf in our typical projects, but taking on a driveway was a fun change of pace, reminiscent of the large concrete driveway we completed in July (See the facebook post here).

Mid-way progress shot

The grid-pattern was the biggest challenge we faced with this job (besides, of course, an absolutely gnarly root system and old irrigation system using electrical conduit instead of PVC…. great work, Lindsey and crew, you crushed it! ) because keeping the lines straight was super tough! We used string lines, chalk, diligence, and a lot of correction work to end up with the lines straight!

Alex keeping the lines in check; Chris and Matt supervising. Check out that pile of roots! That was only a third of em
Getting the pavers aligned with the string… the string doesn’t lie!

Before sweeping all the sand into the joints for this job, we ran the vibratory plate compactor over the top of the pavers to lock them in. This way, they wont shift from the weight of cars driving on them.

The paver grid pattern goes quite well with all of the home’s straight lines and grid feel

We’ll be back to seal this driveway in a few months. The sand will be all cleaned and the pavers will have a beautiful look with the sealer. Stay tuned for another blog post about why sealing pavers (especially your driveway)is so important! Once is sealed, we’ll share some updated pics!

As our company grows, so do our skills. We started out installing turf only, but look at us now! We are not afraid of taking on unique and artistic paver designs. Get onto our books for your next driveway or patio project! Contact us here!
